Term One
DT
In our DT lessons in term 1, Year 5 explored electrical systems and products. We analysed existing products such as fans and electric whisks and asked why and how they work. We then designed our own electronic toy called a doodler. Our target audience was young children aged between 4 and 6 so as well being fun it also needed to look appealing to someone that age. After all, we need people to buy our product. After designing it, we then built our product using a range of material and using a battery, crocodile clips and a motor we were able to make our doodlers move. Once we built and tested our doodlers, we evaluated our product and asked what went well and what could we improve next time.
Music
In our music lessons in term 1, year 5 learnt and rehearsed our own song based on Egypt called Gift of the Nile. We then learnt the basic rhythm of this song and were able to play it on xylophones which we loved! Using this basic rhythm on the xylophone, we then added other instruments and created our own piece of music. Our aim was to create a piece of music to played along the River Nile at the funeral of an Egyptian Pharoh so we needed the song to be slow, with a deeper pitch. We were also trying to create quite a somber, melancholy mood. We really enjoyed it!
