Sports Premium
What is the PE and sports premium?
The PE and sport premium is designed to help primary schools improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils.
Schools must spend the funding to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils, but they are free to choose the best of way using of the money as long as it is used to meet one or more of the following:
- Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that your school already offers
- Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years
There are 5 key indicators we use to secure improvements:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – the Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school
- The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
- Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport
We can use our funding to:
The government suggests that school can use funding to:
- hire specialist PE teachers
- hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
- provide existing staff with teaching resources to help them teach PE and sport
- support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
- run sport competitions or increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
- run sports activities with other schools.
We believe that physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also promotes correct physical growth and development. Exercise has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others. Through sport and other physical activities our children will learn about their responsibilities both as individuals and members of groups and teams. They learn to cooperate and to compete fairly, understanding their own and other’s roles.
At Horsted School we are committed to delivering a broad and balanced Physical Education curriculum enabling positive participation in physical activity.
Through PE and sport, our children are able to become STARS via the development of a range of invaluable life skills including discipline, resilience, communication, teamwork, and ambition.
We aim to ensure that all pupils:
- develop confidence and competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
- engage in competitive sports and activities.
- lead healthy, active lives through sustained periods of physical activity and the development of knowledge of health and wellbeing.
- strive for excellence and celebrate achievements.
- understand and demonstrate fair play and respect.
- have quality opportunities outside of school time.
Each year we publish how we have spent our allocation. Please see this year's document below.
